January's Garden

January is a time to prepare your garden for 2012, and start using any gardening Christmas presents!

If the weather conditions allow, prepare the beds in the kitchen gardens by digging over the soil allowing you to remove any weeds that you may have missed, after a frost has lifted digging over the soil creates a better structure to the soil known as a crumb structure, (a finer broken down soil) this is then ready for sowing seeds when the soil has warmed up as we move into spring   ….. Plan the crop rotation for the year ahead and put in your seed orders with your favourite garden centre. Buy seed potato and set into trays for chitting (to allow a shoot to form). Plus, pick any sprouts and winter cabbages that are not frozen.Trowel
